Because successful companies cannot exist in failed societies.
Every second, 16 people die from cancer in the world. Seventy percent of the cases occur in developing countries such as Nicaragua..
This sad scenario can be reversed by taking responsible measures at the individual, family, governmental, and corporate levels.
CSR and sustainable development are two concepts closely linked that pursue the same goals: social equity and economic development. Despite some differences, both converge to support companies in transitioning to a more sustainable and successful future. An example of this is that mortality from cervical cancer has been reduced by 34% in the last seven years thanks to an alliance between MINSA, Movicancer, and international organizations.
Supporting causes such as those that Movicancer develops provides the opportunity for men, women, and children battling cancer to “leave fear aside and build hope and purpose to progress despite fighting their cancer”; in psychology, this is called Resilience.
At Movicancer Foundation, we have the proverb “The one who fights against his cancer is as much a hero as those who help others to win the battle.”
For us, the support of the private sector is essential to maintain our free services to cancer patients and their families. We have been improving our work for more than 15 years yet there is still much to do to meet the current challenges and the SDG-2030.
Movicancer Foundation, to honor those companies and institutions that support the fight against cancer, has created the brand Solidarity Certificate “Socially Responsible Businesses” to form a community of companies and five-star entrepreneurs that with their “own light” channel a percentage of their profits under the modality of CSR with the vision of promoting the fight against cancer.
This initiative (CSR) is renewed every two years with contributions to a specific program of the Foundation, or by donating without restrictions to dedicate the funds to sensitive areas for its successful development. With your donation, your brand/company joins an exclusive group of prestigious global companies that “work in partnership to prevent cancer and reduce the suffering it causes”.
Movicancer Foundation has deployed an ambitious early detection program for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer that has benefited more than 92,000 women in four health regions of the Republic of Nicaragua through the implementation of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) DNA Test, which causes this type of preventable cancer.
Along with this «early detection» program, we are simultaneously training doctors, gynecologists, and nurses so that they can organize and ensure the timely treatment of women with pre-cancer before they develop symptoms of the disease (invasive cancer). We donate supplies and mobile medical equipment to bring care to the communities where these women are from.
These women are mostly country people who work the land, teachers, merchants in the popular markets, “home assistants”, housewives, or co-workers, but they all contribute to the economic activity in their communities, and when a woman dies from this type of cancer not only the economy of the community is affected, but in most cases the dependent children of these women are forced to drop out of school which threatens their future of overcoming poverty.
In the year 2022, Movicancer Foundation, with the support of partner companies, established an initiative at the Bertha Calderon Hospital that has been unique in Central America and Mexico: the opening of the first Sewing and Crafts Workshop School for women living with cancer, to promote their resilience in the consolidation of their economic, emotional and social autonomy.
This Workshop School is a space for labor rehabilitation, where more than 50 women have resolved their labor difficulties to continue being productive. Each woman admitted receives psychological and social work assistance to include her in occupational therapy activities, which covers a four-unit course in Basic Sewing for the Production of Fabric Articles. Once trained and graduated, they can continue working at home making pieces and articles they can sell in their communities.
The first promotion of these courses was held in February 2024: 15 women graduated and were presented with a sewing machine and certification for their commitment and perseverance in the learning process.
The “Road to Recovery” program is an innovative initiative that includes:
1) Psycho-oncological assistance for thousands of patients treated in the hospitals of the Republic and the National Center for Radiotherapy (CNR) “Dr. Nora Astorga.”
2) Fundraising to provide high-cost oncological treatment, which the families of women with breast cancer cannot afford.
3) Support with funds so that women with cancer and children with hemato-oncological diseases can punctually attend their consultations each month, providing the money they need to mobilize and feed themselves while they arrive at the hospitals in Managua.
This initiative began in 2009 with the support of the Nuremberg Fellowship, Germany, an experience embraced by other organizations supporting the SILAIS in the transportation of patients, so that they can win the battle against cancer.
At Movicancer Foundation we are aware that those who defeat cancer are as much heroes as those who help to win against it.
