Nicaragua incorporates new technology to treat cancer
In homage to the month of the Nicaraguan Mother, the Ministry of Health inaugurated the incorporation of a new Linear Accelerator. This team will be able to attend more than 33 procedures per day, which will mean the opportunity for more Nicaraguans not to have to travel to another country –Costa Rica or El Salvador– to obtain this new service, which previously only Nicaraguans with high resources could afford.
The opening ceremony was held on May 7 at the facilities of the National Radiotherapy Center, with the presence of the Japanese ambassador, Mr. Yasuhisa Suzuki, who on behalf of the people and government of Japan donated this new equipment and with the opening words of the Mrs. Minister of Health Dr. Sonia Castro, who reminisced about the history of cancer care in Nicaragua, remembering protagonists who left their mark by working tirelessly to meet the needs of men, women and children:
Dr. Clemente Guido, Gyneco-Oncologist, who organized the care of women with cervical and breast cancer at the Western Hospital now called Hospital de la Mujer “Dra. Bertha Calderón
Dr. Carlos Vargas, who, to his students at the Women’s Hospital, “never allowed a medical student to touch a patient, if he was not able to mention her name, where she came from, how many children she had, and how she this patient made a living” mentioned Dr. Castro, “that was teaching humanity and love for patients”.
“I feel victorious, happy, joyful and thanking God first and those who donated this device, the president who allowed the installation of this instrument in this place,” said Silvia Pérez, who suffers from cervical cancer and will be treated by with this new technology for free.
More and better treatment
With this equipment, cancer treatments will be more specific or direct to the affected part without damaging other tissue. In other countries they entail costs of up to 15 thousand dollars, not including the cost of mobilization and stay of the companion, here it will be completely free.
