On December 17, the National Foundation Against Cancer, Movicáncer, received a donation of 200,000 córdobas
The National Foundation against Cancer, Movicancer, in alliance with the Ministry of Health (MINSA), inaugurated on February 7 the Pressotherapy and Breast Prosthesis Workshop, located at the Bertha Calderón Hospital, which will allow the manufacture of breast prostheses and compression sleeves for women who have undergone a mastectomy process due to breast cancer.
The inauguration took place within the scope of World Cancer Day, which is commemorated on February 4. This workshop corresponds to the second stage of the Sewing and Crafts Workshop School, which Movicáncer manages for the benefit of women who are being treated for breast cancer at the hospital.
At the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Carmen Cruz, director of the Bertha Calderón Hospital, said that this Pressotherapy Workshop project “symbolizes hope, resilience and a commitment to life”. For this reason, the project is called ‘From Woman to Woman’.
Dr. Cruz further said that this workshop is a complement to the Sewing and Crafts Workshop School inaugurated in 2022, but at the same time it is a new and unique initiative in Central America. “Spread the word about it and let people know what we are doing for the benefit of the patients. This workshop has not only helped them to complete their therapy, but it is also a way for them to leave their disease behind and where they have acquired a skill that will help them a lot when they overcome their treatment,” said Cruz.
For his part, Dr. Juan Ramón Almendarez, general director of Movicáncer, thanked the MINSA authorities “for opening the doors so that we as Movicancer can innovate and carry out projects to fulfill these dreams that the women had”.
“The workshop will serve for other women who have suffered from breast cancer to be able to opt to have their elastic compression sleeves and breast prostheses, and the women who manufacture them will be able to sell them at reasonable prices,” said Dr. Almendarez.
The implementation of this project has been possible with the direct support of the Swiss NGO AMCA, as well as companies committed to CSR: AVON, FUNDENUSE S.A., Caplin Point and Grupo Khatib; in addition, more than 60 companies and thousands of Nicaraguans supported Movicáncer in October 2024 in the 6th edition of the pink race “Yo corro por ellas®”.
The workshop to manufacture breast prostheses and compression sleeves will operate from Monday to Thursday, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, and it is expected that about 15 women who have already passed their sewing courses of the Workshop School of Dressmaking and Crafts, an initiative of Movicáncer, which also has the accreditation of the National Technological Institute, INATEC, will participate.
